I’m so excited you want to join me in a summer book club!

You’ll receive an email from me in just a few minutes welcoming you to the club (check your spam or promotions tab if you can’t find it).

And we’ll be off and running!

This is a summer reading book club for teachers, librarians, and other adults who want to read middle grade and YA books.

Our goal in doing so is to:

  • become familiar with titles we can recommend
  • model book talks
  • set up classroom libraries
  • order/request book sets for literature circles
  • design discussion groups
  • share the love of reading with students!

What are we reading?

This summer, we’ll be reading books that have received a Coretta Scott King Book Award.

As you may already know, that these awards:

“are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.  The award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood” (American Library Association).

You can download a list of each year’s author winner here.

But there are soooo many more honor books on the list to choose from!

You can find all the recipients on the American Library Association’s page.

I love that there is an illustrator winner since these books are often so much fun to use as books for background knowledge, imagery, theme, sensory detail, and more.

How will this book club work?

You can read as many of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards as you like!

Set a goal for yourself, just like you’d encourage your students to do!

I’ll send you an email each week — sharing what I’ve been reading. I hope you’ll respond with your own reviews that I can share with the whole group.

As a member of the summer reading club, I’ll also be sending you free tools that you can use in your classroom, ideas for book clubs, book projects, and discussion ideas.

And, please feel free to share this challenge! Friends can sign up using the link at the top of my blog.

Summer is so short! Our challenge will be quick — we’ll run until August 31 — but, of course, you can keep reading after that!

I’m excite to hear what you’re reading! Be on the lookout for my summer book club email!
